Chapter Six
“Why haven’t we done that before?”
Callum’s eyes had been closed but he opened them as soon as he heard her speak. Leaning up on one elbow, he turned so that he could see her face. He brushed her hair away from her naked breast. Already, the drowsing nipple was tightening to welcome him.
“You were too young,” he said, his voice gruff.
Stella caught his hand before it could envelop her breast. “I’ve been old enough for a long time.”
“You were my cousin.”
She reached up to wipe a dark stain from the side of his mouth. “Wrong again. I was never your cousin. Not in that sense.”
His eyes searched hers. “Is that true? Is that really how you feel?”
“Of course.” Hadn’t he seen proof of that already that night?
“Fuck.” He said the word softly. Then he reached out and hauled her up against his body, melding them together. “I wished I had known that a few years ago.”
“You know it now.”
For her answer, he kissed her thoroughly, devouring her mouth until she was nearly breathless and had to pull away.
The sudden movement made her remember the way he’d fastened his lips on her neck. It throbbed again, the pain reasserting itself like it had just awoken from a long nap.
She reached up to touch it lightly with her fingers but it was too tender to probe. What had he done to her?
Her eyes were on a level with his jaw. Stella looked at his chin. Though it had been hours since he must have last shaved, there wasn’t a single golden bristle visible in the smooth pale skin.
Her stomach slowly turned over.
Her next words were spoken against his throat. His skin was too cool. Why hadn’t she noticed that before?
“Callum… What are you?”
He kissed her again. She could feel the nip of his teeth against her lower lip. Then she knew what he was. Perhaps she’d known it all night long.
“I went back to Romania to find my family,” he told her. “Instead, I found my legacy.”
Romanian. The Carpathians. Transylvania.
Another puzzle piece found its place in her head.
“You haven’t answered me,” she pointed out, her voice quiet in comparison to her racing thoughts.
At that moment, she was convinced that he would never answer her. That he would never be able to put it into words plain enough for her to understand.
She’d been right this past year. She’d lost him when he had gone back to his homeland.
She’d lost him a year ago.
“Yesterday, when I went outside to fix the generator,” Callum said, “I put on the coat and gloves to appease you. I don’t need them. I don’t feel the cold. Or the heat.”
It seemed like a tangent, another delay, before she realized that he was answering her in his own way. Showing her the road to what he’d become—leading her down it, hand in hand.
“What do you feel?” she whispered.
“Hunger,” he said. “Anger. Desire. Lust. The whole host of human emotions, I suppose. Even boredom.” One side of his mouth quirked upwards.
